Traditional laboratory funding mechanisms overlook scientists who may just need a little help to advance their research. We wanted to employ social media in a new way in order to push the boundaries of how it may be used to bring scientists and the public together to facilitate research worldwide.
Recognizing the financial challenges facing many labs today, we devised a microgrant program that would provide a lifeline to researchers at the bench. Leveraging Facebook, we were able to create a campaign that was devoid of red tape for the scientist, while sending 100% of the proceeds directly to their pockets.
We developed a ground-breaking global microgrant program, Search for Research, that brought the scientific community and researchers together to support scientists. Microgrants were awarded to the winning researchers in the United States and Chile.
